2-ethyl hexyl acrylate is an acrylate monomer with a molecular formula of CH2=CHCOOC8H17. It is a clear liquid which is not soluble in water and completely soluble in alcohols and ethers. It is not a very flammable liquid with a flashpoint between 75 – 90° C and has a characteristic acrylic odour. It is easily miscible with other organic solvents and is readily polymerized with monomer molecules to create polymer chains. 2-ethyl acrylate will react with oxidising agents such as alkalis and will polymerise with the application of heat. Polymerisation is inhibited with methyl ether or hydroquinone.
2-ethyl acrylate is commonly produced by combining 2-ethyl hexanol and an acrylic acid in a dehydraisation process that acts as the catalyst.
Storage and Distribution
A solvent trader would have a bulk petrochemical storage facility to maintain the product. Storage is normally in a cool, dry and well ventilated facility away from oxidising agents. 2-ethyl acrylate should be kept out of direct sunlight, heat and open flames. Solvents such as 2-ethyl acrylate should be stored in drummed containers such as isotanks made of stainless steel, aluminium or carbon steel.
A bulk solvent exporter would normally distribute this solvent in bulk vessels or tank trucks. For transportation purposes, 2-ethyl acrylate is classed as a flammable liquid with a fire hazard rating of 2. A full bulk chemical distributor would export the solvent throughout regions such as the UK, Europe, Africa and America. This product is a packing group 2.
2-ethyl acrylate is used in the chemical manufacturing industry for the production of homopolymers and co-polymers which have further uses in creating aqueous polymers. It is used as a co-polymer for caulks, paint coatings, pressure sensitive adhesives, leather finishing, textiles and paper coatings. Due to its low volatile nature and reactivity of double bonds, it is the perfect choice for plasticising many applications. The primary end user market of this product is the textiles, leather, adhesive, paints and coatings industry.
